This lake was named after Major General William Rufus Shafter, who found it in 1875. The town became a ghost town after it lost a county-seat war with nearby Andrews. People say a ghostly Lady in White wanders the graveyard since that time, and that a phantom Confederate troop and their horses may come galloping by during the full moon. It is believed it is Shafter and his men.

  • cops never go out there

Absolutely no one goes out there. If somebody does come there is a vast majority of ways to escape. Very crazy stuff happens and is a great place. Y

  • Hang-out

This was a favorite hang-out for teens years ago. I used to love walking through the cemetery and read some of the few headstones that were left. It is beautiful at night since there are no town lights keeping the night sky blurred. Very cool history, but the access to Shafter has been closed to the public now.
